Therapy for Adults
Supporting Your Journey to a Fulfilling Life
My name is Dr. Nancy Millian. I’m a Licensed Clinical Psychologist offering individual therapy for adults and teens in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
I understand you may have the drive and potential to lead the life you dream of. But I also know that noise, stress, and unannounced storms can bring many roadblocks to your path. I strive to help you navigate and overcome the challenges clouding your journey, so you can accomplish your work, family, and life goals.
I work with adults from different backgrounds and cultures. I particularly enjoy coaching professional women who want to lead thriving careers while being there for their partners, children, and loved ones.

What Is Therapy for Adults?
Individual therapy is a line of psychotherapy that aims to help adults process their difficulties and improve their lives. Sessions can focus on a variety of problems, from ongoing stressors and emotional hardship to diagnosable mental illnesses.
The goal is to open a non-judgmental environment to discuss your concerns while discovering and applying practices to support your well-being.
Benefits of attending therapy may include:
-
Building self-awareness
-
Encouraging motivation and focus
-
Establishing and accomplishing your personal and professional objectives
-
Exploring career prospects and finding your life purpose
-
Improving your interpersonal relationships
-
Leading a healthier work and home life
-
Managing distressing symptoms
-
Recognizing and shifting problematic habits
Do I Need Therapy?
Suffering is part of the human experience, and it comes in various degrees and forms. While a therapist can help you manage severe mental health crises, they can also coach you to grow in multiple areas: self-development, work, family, and relationships.
Common symptoms or problems addressed in therapy include:
-
Anger
-
Anxiety
-
Burnout
-
Depression
-
Career concerns
-
Chronic health issues
-
Grief and loss
-
High expectations or demands at home and work
-
Identity conflicts
-
Interpersonal, family, or relationship issues
-
Life transitions
-
Low self-esteem
-
Stress
-
And more!
More than “needing,” sometimes therapy is a matter of “wanting” to get better.
Do not wait until things get out of hand to reach out. If you want to address any of the above issues or gain valuable skills to enhance your quality of life, therapy can help.
How Can Therapy Help Me?
Therapy is not a magical fix or a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s an in-depth treatment customized to your needs to help you minimize distress, grow, and move forward.
Individual therapy can support you by:
Facilitating Awareness and Self-Reflection
We can all get lost in our problems very quickly. Racing thoughts and overwhelming emotions can make us feel trapped, hopeless, and out of control.
Therapy can help you become a better observer of your life, encouraging your awareness of yourself, your surroundings, and how you relate to it all. You will have the opportunity and guidance to reflect on your pain, process your thoughts and feelings, and connect the dots between them. You will also identify any harmful line of thinking or acting that may not be serving your purpose.
Changing Thoughts and Behaviors
Awareness is only the first step toward transformation. Once you have a clear understanding of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, you can explore healthier ways to change or cope with them.
We can use different approaches in therapy, but the idea is to develop skills to deal with stressors and discern what your inner world is trying to communicate. This includes strategies for emotional regulation, thought reframing, and mindful living, among other practices.
Strengthening Connections
We are all relational beings, and therapy will help you embrace this nature. The therapeutic relationship is the perfect testing ground to learn and practice how to interact, communicate, and bond with others (family, partners, friends, coworkers, etc.).
We will focus on strengthening your connection with yourself and those around you to fuel your inner balance and mental well-being.
Individual Therapy for Adults With Dr. Nancy Millian
I offer individual therapy for adults, among other services, in New Haven Cty, Fairfield Cty, Westchester Cty, Bergen Cty, and nearby areas.
My adult therapy specialties include depression, anxiety, stress management, grief, intimacy issues, self-esteem, managing demanding careers and family needs, and life transitions (e.g., job changes, divorce, retirement).
I use evidence-based techniques like Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help you set and reach your goals. For example, we can work on identifying unhelpful thinking patterns (e.g., catastrophizing) while increasing helpful behaviors (e.g., mindful meditation). As we challenge and change your problematic thoughts and incorporate new habits, you will experience improvements in your mood, functioning, and overall health.
No matter where you are or what are the pages in your story, you have the ability to create change and thrive. I’m here to listen, help you identify and build upon your strengths, and collaborate with you to accomplish your life’s vision.
